Going to Sunny Bay (= Yam O, the original name of this place) for a hike??? Wooow, it sounds cool! Many people don't realise there's still a beautiful scenic spot here~ Luk Keng Village of Yam O!!

When you travel by MTR (Tung Chung Line) to Lantau, you may be attracted by the lumber in the sea and doubt that why they are there?
The fact is, Yam O used to be a lumber preservation zone in HK, so this is why there're still lumber on stilts in Yam O Bay now.
This scene attracted many visitors to Luk Keng Village (along Yam O Bay) in the past, but due to the construction of HK Int'l Airport,
it changed the outlook of Yam O a lot, many lumber also disappeared....

Because of the construction of DisneyLand, the name of Yam O is changed to Sunny Bay. Although MTR is available and makes it easier and more quickly to access Yam O,
the number of visitors has dropped a lot, and now many village houses are abandoned.

Yam O in 1964, full of lumber!!

J

We arrived Sunny Bay MTR station @ 10:00. Then walked to the way for the bus terminus (buses for Discovery Bay).
There're some plants grown nearby, with a path in between the plants. Walk through this path and then you'll reach the seaside of Yam O (just next to the rail of Tung Chung line).
You can see the two little islands, Luk Keng (left) and Cheung Sok (right).
There are still lumber on stilts @ Yam O bay today.

J

Today's spot: Luk Keng Village of Yam O

J

We walked along Yam O Bay, which is just next to the rail of MTR trains. The end of Yam O bay is the entrance of Luk Keng village.
The village footpath is very hiker-friendly, but there's a tree nearly falling down, be careful.
There's a big snake nearby, don't step on it, it will go away when there're people around.

J

Here we are in OLD Luk Keng Village!! ~ But with NEW seaside village house now!! It should be re-built from old wooden house.
There are also chopping board, fish net and very very old soft-drink fridge!
(This old Pepsi Fridge is already in this village during the time before the construction of Tung Chung MTR line. Many people came here in the old past to have a look @ the lumber on stilts!! It used to be a famous scenic spot in the old days!)

J

An old village house @ the seaside.

J

A closeup of lumber on stilts!! ~ This used to be a scenic spot! Visitors in the past liked to walk on the lumbers and then walked to the middle of the sea bay,
to have a look at the wooden raft (a wooden house floating on the sea). Now as not many lumber is left, we could just walk on the lumber @ the seaside, what a pity!!
But we nearly fell into the water!! Hahaha!!

J

Now @ Luk Keng Pier~ Before MTR is available in Lantau, there was ONLY Kai-to ferry service to Luk Keng village, the "On Kee" ferry, which was NOT in service any more from 2009.
In the past, "On Kee" ferry started from Tsing Lung Tau (Sham Cheng, near Tuen Mun) pier, and directly to Luk Keng pier.
But as there were always not enough passengers for ferry, "On Kee" ferry was not usually in service.
In the past, if visitors wanted to have a visit here, they formed large hiking teams in order to get On Kee Ferry for service.

J

We walked along the seacoast of Luk Keng Pier, to Cheung Sok Island (at the back of Tachibana san, 2nd photo!).
No people are living in Cheung Sok Island, because of its nature~ it's a tombolo! You can reach Cheung Sok Island during low tide, but the pebble path will be inside the sea during high tide!!
This is why nobody lives there. It was low tide this morning, we tried to reach Cheung Sok Island from Luk Keng.
But when we were walking along the seacoast, it suddenly turned very dark and it was going to rain!!
Rain may lead to sudden rise of sea level and we might be trapped in Cheung Sok Island!! So we gave up the walk to Cheung Sok Island and moved back to Luk Keng village.

J

Oh, there's a store here for snacks and drinks!! But couldn't see anyone inside this morning.

J

There's a BBQ site @ Luk Keng Village, with woods nearby, leading to Yam Chai Bay.

J

Yam Chai Bay is very beautiful!!! In the past, people could see Chinese white dolphins here!!!
But as there are ships and pollution near this place, we can't see any dolphins here now.

J

Our tour-guides, also local residents here~ 2 laughing dogs!! They are very lovely and friendly, also very curious, they walked with us wherever we went!!
Their barking noises also surprised us!! We even could hear their barks near Sunny Bay MTR station.

J

Just a good-bye to wonderful Yam O!! We'll be back in Autumn, when the temperature is not so high.
