Going to Sunny Bay (= Yam O, the original name of this place) for a hike??? Wooow, it sounds cool! Many people don't realise there's still a beautiful scenic spot here~ Luk Keng Village of Yam O!!

When you travel by MTR (Tung Chung Line) to Lantau, you may be attracted by the lumber in the sea and doubt that why they are there?
The fact is, Yam O used to be a lumber preservation zone in HK, so this is why there're still lumber on stilts in Yam O Bay now.
This scene attracted many visitors to Luk Keng Village (along Yam O Bay) in the past, but due to the construction of HK Int'l Airport,
it changed the outlook of Yam O a lot, many lumber also disappeared....

Because of the construction of DisneyLand, the name of Yam O is changed to Sunny Bay. Although MTR is available and makes it easier and more quickly to access Yam O,
the number of visitors has dropped a lot, and now many village houses are abandoned.

Yam O in 1964, full of lumber!!

J

We arrived Sunny Bay MTR station @ 10:00. Then walked to the way for the bus terminus (buses for Discovery Bay).
There're some plants grown nearby, with a path in between the plants. Walk through this path and then you'll reach the seaside of Yam O (just next to the rail of Tung Chung line).
You can see the two little islands, Luk Keng (left) and Cheung Sok (right).
There are still lumber on stilts @ Yam O bay today.

J

Today's spot: Luk Keng Village of Yam O

J

We walked along Yam O Bay, which is just next to the rail of MTR trains. The end of Yam O bay is the entrance of Luk Keng village.
The village footpath is very hiker-friendly, but there's a tree nearly falling down, be careful.
There's a big snake nearby, don't step on it, it will go away when there're people around.

J

Here we are in OLD Luk Keng Village!! ~ But with NEW seaside village house now!! It should be re-built from old wooden house.
There are also chopping board, fish net and very very old soft-drink fridge!
(This old Pepsi Fridge is already in this village during the time before the construction of Tung Chung MTR line. Many people came here in the old past to have a look @ the lumber on stilts!! It used to be a famous scenic spot in the old days!)

J

An old village house @ the seaside.

J

A closeup of lumber on stilts!! ~ This used to be a scenic spot! Visitors in the past liked to walk on the lumbers and then walked to the middle of the sea bay,
to have a look at the wooden raft (a wooden house floating on the sea). Now as not many lumber is left, we could just walk on the lumber @ the seaside, what a pity!!
But we nearly fell into the water!! Hahaha!!

J

Now @ Luk Keng Pier~ Before MTR is available in Lantau, there was ONLY Kai-to ferry service to Luk Keng village, the "On Kee" ferry, which was NOT in service any more from 2009.
In the past, "On Kee" ferry started from Tsing Lung Tau (Sham Cheng, near Tuen Mun) pier, and directly to Luk Keng pier.
But as there were always not enough passengers for ferry, "On Kee" ferry was not usually in service.
In the past, if visitors wanted to have a visit here, they formed large hiking teams in order to get On Kee Ferry for service.

J

We walked along the seacoast of Luk Keng Pier, to Cheung Sok Island (at the back of Tachibana san, 2nd photo!).
No people are living in Cheung Sok Island, because of its nature~ it's a tombolo! You can reach Cheung Sok Island during low tide, but the pebble path will be inside the sea during high tide!!
This is why nobody lives there. It was low tide this morning, we tried to reach Cheung Sok Island from Luk Keng.
But when we were walking along the seacoast, it suddenly turned very dark and it was going to rain!!
Rain may lead to sudden rise of sea level and we might be trapped in Cheung Sok Island!! So we gave up the walk to Cheung Sok Island and moved back to Luk Keng village.

J

Oh, there's a store here for snacks and drinks!! But couldn't see anyone inside this morning.

J

There's a BBQ site @ Luk Keng Village, with woods nearby, leading to Yam Chai Bay.

J

Yam Chai Bay is very beautiful!!! In the past, people could see Chinese white dolphins here!!!
But as there are ships and pollution near this place, we can't see any dolphins here now.

J

Our tour-guides, also local residents here~ 2 laughing dogs!! They are very lovely and friendly, also very curious, they walked with us wherever we went!!
Their barking noises also surprised us!! We even could hear their barks near Sunny Bay MTR station.

J

Just a good-bye to wonderful Yam O!! We'll be back in Autumn, when the temperature is not so high.

J

We waited @ the front of Wan Chai Old Market (Queen's Road East), there're a few bus stops. Take bus no.6 or 66 and get off @ Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park,
which is just next to SINOPEC gasoline station. There's a direction sign for Tai Tam Reservoir Road, walk upstairs and then you'll see another road sign for Hong Kong Parkview.
Just walk up the traffic road for Hong Kong Parkview.

J

Now we were in front of Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park, there's a kiosk for snacks and boat rental.
Then we moved upwards to Hong Kong Parkview. The "correct" entrance for Tai Tam Country Park and Tai Tam Waterworks Heritage Trail is just next to HK Parkview.
Don't enter from the wrong place.

J

You'll need to have quite a long walk from the entrance of the country park to the reservoir.
Then you'll see "Tai Tam Upper Reservoir". Cross the stone bridge and there're 2 ways to choose.
First walk to the way for Quarry Gap (Tai Fung Au), that is the road along the reservoir.

J

We walked along Tai Tam Upper Reservoir, which was built over 100 years (for all in Tai Tam actually)!!
The classic British design makes us feel like travelling back to the old days!@

J

Now we had reached Tai Tam Byewash Reservoir, and we took some photos near the dam.
There's a little rain / sun shelter nearby, and the footpath for Tai Tam Road (next to the rain shelter) is also for Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir.

J

Keep on moving forward to Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir. We could see Tai Tam Intermediate Reservoir when we were passing by.
But the direction sign is already covered by the trees. But luckily we could still see the dam and the lower part of this reservoir.

J

We kept on moving forward for Tai Tam Road, until we reached the picnic area~~
there are 2 wooden birds outside with very funny faces!! If you've reached here, you're very close to the arch bridge of Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir.

J

Woow!! What a wonderful scene!! Here's the most beautiful part of Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir~ the Arch Bridge, which is a popular spot for photographers.

J

Although the rain was quite heavy this morning, when it stopped, the temperature now was over 30C!!!
The heatwave made the poor dog salivating. Now we were @ the exit of Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir, the walk for the reservoir area came to an end.
But we still kept on moving to Tai Tam Tuk Village.

J

Now we were @ Tai Tam Road. Just cross the road to the opposite side for Tai Tam Reservoir Road.
There's also a direction sign for Tai Tam Tuk Society. Walk downwards until you can see Hong Kong International School.
There's a footpath to the seaside (Tai Tam Harbour). Walk along the seaside for the way to the jetty.
Then you keep on walking along Tai Tam Harbour for a while, and you'll reach Tai Tam Tuk Village.

(http://www.wakeboard.com.hk/location.htm)

J

A good place for wakeboard lovers @ 78 Tai Tam Tuk Village ! (http://www.wakeboard.com.hk/location.htm)

J

Foon Lok Store was closed (seems already closed, not for business any more)... but we entered to have a look without any one knows.

J

No Foon Lok Store, just moved to Jade Flower BBQ site nearby, which is also @ the seaside.
To prevent melting, I ordered an iced lemon coke, it was really very hot!!!!!!!!!
The owner of Jade Flower BBQ told me that they can make special arrangements for us if we need Vegan BBQ,
but need to phone her in advance.
Their phone numbers: 28139760 / 97718902, call Jenny for reservation

J

We just arrived when it was low tide~ we could see lots of shore creatures in the mud.

J

The BIG Tai Tam Tuk main dam is right here!!! It's over a hundred years old!!!

J

There's a forest path and staircases for Tai Tam Road at the back of the Big main dam.
Walk up to Tai Tam Road and you can see the cars moving on the main dam!!

J

Bus no. 14, minibuses no. 16M and 16X available @ Tai Tam Road.
The Minibus terminus is just next to Exit C of Chai Wan MTR station.
